I do not suppose that there are very many people in the English-speaking (and singing) world who have not heard "Sur le pont d'Avignon". In my own case I learned its chorus either from my mother or at school at the tender age of six or seven as my first foreign language song. It was only when browsing through Lieder, Songs und Gospels 1 that I found that the song had verses (albeit very short). I had never previously questioned who was actually doing all that dancing in circles ("l'on y danse, l'on y danse"). The version I now sing has six verses in which noble gentlemen, beautiful ladies, soldiers, cobblers, laundresses and musicians all take their turn in dancing on the famous bridge in Avignon.
